Patent Type Field (PT)
The PT field code is one that you should commit to memory. It lets you filter and query for different type of patents. There are five acceptable values for the PT field code:
- U --> Utility Patents
- D --> Design Patents
- PP --> Plant Patents
- RE --> Reissue Patent
- H --> SIR (Statutory Invention Registration)
Note that PT is different than KCOD (Kind Code) or DT (Document Type), and that the PT field code is ONLY used for US documents.
The above is an example of a utility patent. The view here is set to Image View so that you can see that this search is on patents of a more technical nature, where the patent and diagrams are written to show use or utility. The query is:
"coffee maker" AND heater AND PT:U
Notice that the drawings are more technical.
The above is an example of a design patent. The view here is set to Image View so that you can see this search is on the design, specifically. The query is:
"coffee maker" AND heater AND PT:D
Notice that the query is exactly the same as the utility patent search in the first example, except for the PT:D instead of PT:U. The images shown are of a more artistic nature instead of a technical one.
Other Search Examples:
PT:PP --> Returns only plant patents.
PT:(U OR RE) --> Returns both utility and reissue patents.
Note that without this PT restriction, AcclaimIP will return patents from every category that match your query.
